What can volunteers do in Banda Aceh?

HELP!

A big portion of Dennis Denow's ministry in Banda Aceh City centers around helping to improve the quality of life for people by working in the education system there. He shares with us that probably the most important assistance that the LCMS can provide is in training teachers. When they conduct teacher training workshops, more than 100 teachers often attend. The teachers are eager to learn, so that they can become better teachers. Additionally, the following opportunities for short term volunteers are welcomed:

  • English conversation and practice with English teachers and students
  • sports camps - volleyball, basketball, soccer, etc.
  • basic computer training
  • seminars about health, hygiene, nutrition, etc.
  • content and methodology training for math and science teachers
  • assisting in community centers with games and activities for children
  • workshops in sewing, knitting, crocheting and other handicrafts
  • others - according to the interests and abilities of the volunteers.

Another important aspect of the work in Banda Aceh is BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS. ANYONE can go to Banda Aceh and simply make a friend and be a friend!

[Jesus] told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the Harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. (Luke 10:2)

'...For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' "

Matthew 25:35-40 NIV
