Jesus Who is Jesus?

Our Lord Jesus said, “The Scriptures testify about me.” (John 5:39)

Our Lord Jesus said, “If you remain in my Word, truly you are my disciples.” (John 8:31)

Paul teaches us that "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

So at LCoP, in our corporate worship, we proclaim the Word of God. Through this proclamation, we pray that

God Almighty Might Build Up His Church
that We Might Glorify Him.

In our worship services, the Scripture readings - Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, and Gospel - for a given Sunday are assigned by the Lectionary. We use the Three Year Lectionary; we are currently in Series B.

In his epistle, James encourages us to be "doers of the Word and not hearers only" (James 1:22). "Healthy church members are those who listen in a particular way to the Word of God as it is preached and studied - they let God set the agenda by seeking always to hear the true meaning of the text so that they can apply it to their lives." (What Is a Healthy Church Member? written by Thabiti M. Anyabwile)

Mr. Anyabwile encourages church members to become "expositional listeners". Among other things, this includes meditating on the scripture readings both before and after a given Sunday's service; praying for the Pastor or Lay Leader while he is preparing the sermon; talking and praying with friends about the sermon and scripture readings after church and throughout the week. As an aid and encouragement to be more healthy church members, the scripture readings for the past several and the next several Sundays are listed here. Become an Expositional Listener:

  • Starting on Thursday, daily read the Scriptures for the coming Sunday.
  • Ask God to grant wisdom and understanding to the Pastor or Lay Leader as he prepares for Sunday's service.
  • Then on the days following the service, re-read these Scriptures, meditating on them and the sermon.
  • Talk with your friends and family about this specific, recently-heard Word of God and its impact on your lives.
  • Pray that God's will be done in your life, in your family's life, and in the lives of all Christians everywhere.
